Celesta Players ADS (Amateur Dramatic Society) was originally formed in 1961 by a group of local people who wished to stage theatre productions for the local community. Its first play was "Lord Babs" in November of that year. Prior to East Didsbury Methodist Hall, Celesta's had a permanent home at St Lukes Hall Burton Road. Four plays were performed in Christ Church West Didsbury. For historical effect One of these plays, "Son of Man", was also performed in St Luke's Church Benchill and St Clements Church Chorlton following requests from the clergy of both Parishes. Celesta Players Amateur Dramatic Society has become well established in the village of Didsbury, South Manchester. We also have an active youth group, Celesta Youth, with members from 6 to 16 years of age.
For many years we have appeared regularly at the East Didsbury Methodist Church Hall, which has a purpose built stage and can accommodate audiences of over 100 people. In the early days of the Society there was usually only one drama production per season. This was later supplemented by a pantomime during the Christmas Period and has gradually expanded to include an autumn play and a summer review at the end of our season.
We remain a small but dedicated Amateur Dramatic Society that is always looking for new members, both as Dramatis Personae as well as behind the scenes. Celesta Players ADS is also a full member of the Greater Manchester Drama Federation (GMDF). This is an umbrella organisation for many amateur dramatic groups in the Greater Manchester area.
